GUA MUSANG, Oct 22: PAS has chosen the party’s Gua Musang division acting chairman Dr Zulkefli Mohamad, who contested against Tengku Razaleigh in 2008, as its candidate for the upcoming Galas by-election.
The close to midnight announcement was made by PAS Murshidul Am and Kelantan Menteri Besar, Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, at a ceremony held at Dataran Ilmu here.
Also present were top leaders from Pakatan Rakyat including PAS president Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and DAP deputy secretary general Ngeh Khoo Ham, representing DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang who has been taken ill since yesterday.
The 44-year old Zulkefli is a well known medical doctor who runs his clinic in Gua Musang. He is the son of Mohamad Awang, a PAS leader who once served as PAS Kelantan’s information chief in 1996.
Zulkefli is the seventh among 10 siblings and graduated from the University of Malaya in 1992. He was also the PAS candidate for the Galas state constituency in 2004, and the Gua Musang parliamentary in 2008 prior to this.
The Galas by-election will be the country’s 12th by-election since March 2008, and is being held following the death of PAS’s Che Hashim.
The late Che Hashim won with a majority of 646-vote, securing 4,399 votes against BN’s Saufi Deraman who gained 3,753 votes.
The Malays make up 61.63 per cent of the 11,553 voters in the state constituency, the Chinese 20.08 per cent, Indians 1.6 per cent, while other races are approximately 17 per cent. There is also a large concentration of Orang Asli in the constituency.
