Ex-convicts can be village head

IPOH: Ex-convicts can run for the post of new village head in Perak.

14_11Simpang Pulai assemblyman Chan Ming Kai said they had been justly dealt with and had returned to society as normal citizens.

“Anyone aged between 21 and 75 and have the relevant new village address on their MyKad are eligible to run for the post,” he said when announcing the inaugural nomination and balloting for the Gunung Rapat new village head yesterday.

Nomination will be on Sunday at the Dewan Fook Tat Chee from 9am to 12pm and voting on Jan 1.

Chan said interested candidates would need at least one nomination from a fellow villager.

“Everything will be computerised and we can detect those who have cast their ballot. This will ensure a fair voting process,” he said, adding that the villagers could witness the counting of ballots.

Chan pointed out that the process in Gunung Rapat would serve as a pilot project for the other 133 new villages.

He said any shortcomings would be noted and improved upon.

Nomination and election dates for other new villages in the Simpang Pulai constituency would be announced later.

In November, state executive councillor Nga Kor Ming had announced that the post of new village chiefs would be elected for the states’ 134 new villages.

For details on the Gunung Rapat election, interested candidates can contact Tan Kar Hing (012-6771788), Simon Ooi Tze Min (012-4202264) or Lee Yin Ying (017-3233329 or 05-3114608.)
